This is one of my favorite places to visit my beloved Pittsburgh! I don’t think you will find a more unique place or person on the face of the earth!
Though the North Side is a colorful, wonderfully historic place, what appears on the corner of Jacksonia and Arch streets is nothing short of whimsical. The child-like paintings and recycled artwork make you wonder who lives there, and you might not be surprised if the answer were someone like Willy Wonka or Mary Poppins. With a quote like, “If I can leave one message for the world it would be this: It’s not what’s in your pocket, but what’s in your soul that counts. If things aren’t exactly what you want, recreate them, restructure them, rebuild them your way,” I wonder if we can nominate Randy Gilson to be the mayor of Pittsburgh. He’s already (kind of) the mayor of the North Side. Everyone seems to know him….and ❤ him.

Need some baking inspiration? Try this basic chocolate cake recipe:
2 cups white sugar
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 9″ round pans.
In a large bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla, mix for 2 minutes on medium speed of mixer. Stir in the boiling water last. Batter will be thin. Pour evenly into the prepared pans.
Bake 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until the cake tests done with a toothpick. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
Use your favorite icing to top off this delicious chocolate cake and enjoy!
